United Church of Canada is supporting Christian Care Zimbabwe to increase food security by promoting a conservation farming system and developing an Open-pollinated Variety (OPV) seed production system within the Nkayi district. The first year of this three year program will benefit 390 farmers in12 wards in Nkayi district of Matabeleland North Province. 140 farmers will be trained in conservation farming and seed multiplication and an additional 250 farmers will be trained on seed bank management and intercropping using legumes. Farmer workshops will be held in seven new wards to train the farmers on principles and practices of conservation farming.  The desired outcome is that yields will increase by more than 500% over conventional farming and in the process improve household food security. The introduction of legumes in conservation farming is set to contribute towards improving soil fertility and preventing pest and disease build up in the conservation farming plots.
