Mennonite Central Committee Canada is supporting Takeo Community Forestry Integrated Development Association with a project to increase food security in Tramkok District, Takeo Province by rehabilitating 6 canals to provide irrigation for farmers and by providing extension services, so that farmers can increase their agricultural output. The direct beneficiaries of the program are approximately 1,100 families (4,700 people) and indirect beneficiaries are approximately 3,500 families (15,300 people). Food security stands as one of the pressing development issues facing Cambodia. Nationally, Cambodia has low rice yields, well below that of neighboring countries. According to information presented at the UN sponsored World Food Day half a million Cambodians go hungry every day. Most food shortages in Cambodia are cyclical in nature, with shortages in food in the rural areas lasting 3-6 months annually.
