Lead Member: Christian Reformed World Relief Committee
Country: Nicaragua

File Number: 2250-11
Budget: $169,114
Time Period: October 2009 – September 2010 (Year 1 of 3)

CRWRC Nicaragua is supporting their local partner Acción Médica Cristiana (AMC) to implement a three year project to improve food security in twenty eight communities in the municipalities of Waspam and Tasba Pri in the North Atlantic Autonomous Region of Nicaragua. The project’s purpose is to improve agricultural practices and productivity in a sustainable way. This three year project follows a previous three year phase (funded by other donors) that saw AMC establish a network of six community-based ‘agriculture technology transfer centers’ in strategic locations throughout the programming area. These centers are to be a catalyst in testing and introducing improved and non-traditional agricultural crops and practices. Over three years this project will directly work with 360 partner farmers and 720 associate farmers. After participating in trials at the centers, participating farmers will replicate the new technologies on their own land and demonstrate their potential to neighboring families in their communities. The essence of this program is to motivate farmers to adopt cropping models that will increase production from a limited land base, using natural, locally available inputs, in an environmentally sustainable context appropriate to the local conditions. This project is co-funded by the Food Resource Bank.
