On May 2, 2008 tropical cyclone Nargis hit the southern coast of Myanmar/Burma, tearing through the heavily populated Ayeyarwady delta region and leaving tens of thousands dead and approximately 1 to 2 million homeless. The Ayeyarwady Delta Division was one of the five worst affected areas and considered part of Myanmar’s “food bowl”. As a follow-up to an initial emergency food response (#2153-01), Christian Reformed World Relief Committee is continuing to work with World Concern – Myanmar to restore the food security of 2000 cyclone affected households in the southern Ayeyarwaddy delta. This response is replacing fishing boats, nets and ice boxes for those families whose livelihood and food security depends on fishing.
