On May 2, 2008 tropical cyclone Nargis hit the southern coast of
Myanmar/Burma, tearing through the heavily populated Ayeyarwady delta region
and leaving tens of thousands dead and approximately 1 to 2 million homeless. The
five worst affected areas are Ayeyarwady, Yangon and Bago Divisions, and Mon and Kayin States,
which are considered Myanmar’s “food bowl”. Many
survivors, particularly children, men and women in the remote regions far from
the capital, are without shelter and with little or no access to drinking water
and food. World Concern will provide four weeks of emergency food rations to 2,500
cyclone affected families (approximately 12,500 individuals) in Yangon and Ayeyarwady in Mon State. A further response may follow.
