Unusual
and unprecedented heavy rains in the Southern provinces of Zambia towards the
end of December 2007 have caused flash floods and water logging, destroying
vast areas of crops and leaving many people homeless. Continuing heavy rains
all through the early weeks of January 2008 worsened the situation for people
living on riverbanks and other low-lying areas. Caritas Zambia, through its
Diocesan and Parish network seeks to support 4,000 of the most vulnerable
families such as child and female headed households. Approximately 24,000
persons will receive emergency food aid, seeds and fertilizer for fast winter
cropping during the April-June seasons and the subsequent November-March
season. The intended beneficiaries will also receive farm implements and
technical support to manage their crops including post harvest storage and
marketing.
