Communities living along the Coco River, bordering Honduras, have been affected by many natural disasters in recent years – hurricanes, drought, flooding, rat plagues, and crop diseases – all of which have contributed to their vulnerability and inability to cope with new shocks.

Hurricane Felix struck this region on September 4, 2007, bringing heavy rains and flooding that destroyed crops and has put next year’s productive cycle in jeopardy. The communities of the region are experiencing shortages of food and seed. The large number of trees down in the forest along the river also has many experts concerned that the conditions are perfect for another rat plague.

Immediately following the hurricane, most of the affected communities have been receiving some short-term food aid from WFP, CARE, OXFAM, and others. This will end in December.

In order to bridge the short-term food gap and restart the productive cycle in the region,  this project will be providing food aid, bean and rice seed, and technical assistance to 32 affected communities (2,380 families). By ensuring that producers in the region have the seed necessary to plant bean and rice crops, the technical assistance needed to bring about successful harvests, and the nutritional inputs necessary to remain active and working, the project is contributing to the rehabilitation and long-term food security of the region.
