Eritrea - Supplementary Feeding Programme, #1933-01

Lead Member: World Relief Canada
Country: Eritrea
Implementing Partners: Kale Hiwot Church of Eritrea
Food/Inputs: 615 metric tonnes DMK (a blended food mix)
Budget: $419,123
Time Period: April 2005 - August 2006
This project will supply 615 tonnes of DMK (a blended food mix) as part of a larger 1,530 tonnes of DMK for a supplementary feeding and nutrition project in Eritrea in Gheleb and Hamelmalo sub-zobas in the north west regions of Anseba. The project is being implemented by the Kale Hiwot Church, with support from World Relief Canada, Tear Fund UK, Dutch Inter-Church Aid and UNICEF. A nutrition survey conducted in January 2005 found a very high Global Acute Malnutrition rate of 15.5% for children under five years of age. Eritrea is facing major food shortages due to drought and economic dislocation caused by the war with Ethiopia. 58% of the population is in need of free food distribution. Access to water and health services is severely constrained. This project will provide supplementary food to 10,700 children under the age of five, and 4,300 pregnant and lactating mothers over a 17th month period. It is expected that general food rations for targeted beneficiaries will be provided by the Eritrea Relief and Refugee Commission. An internationally recognized Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation program will also be conducted alongside the feeding program to help communities improve their environment and manage their water and sanitation facilities, particularly for the prevention of diarrhoeal disease. The Kale Hiwot Church is also planning to initiate a pilot community empowerment project involving drip irrigation programmes and village seed banks.
