Program Description:
The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the early 1990's left the region around Prijedor devastated. Living spaces, factories and infrastructure were destroyed. The region's infrastructure and economy have not yet been able to recover significantly since the end of the war.

Bread of Life will provide regular access to food for a segment of the most endangered persons in the Prijedor region to improve their nutrition/health and allow for normal growth of children. Until such time as they can provide for themselves or the state-run social services can provide for them, food assistance will be needed.

Beneficiaries, Vulnerability, and Targeting:
  • 80 elderly and disabled households with little or no pension and no adult children to support them
  • 20 single parent families with two or more children and no financial support
Program Impacts:
The overall purpose of the project is to provide the most vulnerable portion of the population with regular access to food. These programs will:
  • provide monthly food parcels to 100 vulnerable households for 12 months
  • improve nutritional status of children
  • provide regular access to food for beneficiaries
  • provide stabilization of health for elderly, ill and physically vulnerable
Other Comments and Issues:
Bread of Life is a local church-based agency which was created in response to the needs of refugees and displaced persons during the civil war in the early 1990s. Mennonite Central Committee has been supporting the work of Bread of Life for a number of years. This food assistance program is one aspect of this support.
