Program Description: This project will provide seeds to 2,000 farmers who had to
flee their home area because of violent fighting between
religious communities. Each farmer will be given 10 kg dry land
rice seed, 5 kg maize seed, 4 kg each of red bean seeds, green
bean seeds, and peanut seeds. Because of religious tensions,
the Christian NGO (Crisis Centre) will make seed distributions
to the Christian communities and the Muslim NGO (Yayasn Sejeti)
will distribute the seeds to the Muslim farmers. CRWRC
Indonesia will work with both agencies on planning, monitoring
and reporting. In addition to the seeds provided by the
Foodgrains Bank, CRWRC is providing additional assistance to
obtain tools and fertilizer for the farmers.
Beneficiaries, Vulnerability, and
Targeting: The beneficiaries are Christian and Muslim peasants farmers
that have been displaced by the escalating conflict which has
been on the rise since 1998. Often the people are not able to
go to their fields because it is too dangerous. Since being
displaced, some of the people have been lent land, but they do
not have the seeds and tools to begin farming again. The local
NGOs have been collaborating to identify farmers who have
access to land and need assistance to begin farming.
Program Impacts: The purpose of the project is to improve the food security
situation of those affected by the conflict. The specific
objective is to support local food distribution through the
distribution of seeds, tools and fertilizer. After the project
is complete, the implementing agencies will interview the
farmers to see how they benefited from the support they
received.
Other Comments and Issues: In addition to growing more food, this project is also working
at building trust between the two Muslim and Christian
communities to reduce the tensions. That is why CRWRC is
working with both Christian and Muslim organizations. As they
see the organizations work together for the betterment of the
people it is hoped that the people in the communities will
learn ways to resolve problems without the use of
violence.
