Eritrea is facing severe food shortages due to a meagre 2004 harvest and a weak economy resulting from the unresolved border conflict with Ethiopia. Over two thirds of the population are in need of food assistance. Canadian Foodgrains Bank has approved a $1.5 million food response to supply 3,147 tonnes of Canadian wheat to Eritrea. This wheat will be distributed to some 40,000 beneficiaries in the central region in rural areas near the capital of Asmara. Beneficiary selection and food distribution is being coordinated by the Eritrea Relief and Refugee Commission (ERREC). Our partner is the Lutheran World Federation. They have been working in Eritrea since 1985 and have developed the project agreement with ERREC and will be responsible for monitoring and reporting on the food distribution.
