The local inhabitants are poor and suffer acute food insecurity. This project will improve the local agricultural environment by draining out stagnant water that has caused enormous and increased suffering for the local people over the past 50 years. Modern techniques and training on field and horticultural crops, fish culture, poultry and livestock will be introduced to meet the year round nutritional needs and enhance the income of the local people. Special attention will be given to female empowerment by introducing training on different vocations. Regular maintenance of the canals and roads will be ensured through formation of local canal management committees. The project will utilize 450 tonnes of rice for the food-for-work component of the project and benefit 1,450 families. Other food security activities will benefit another 1,590 families.
