Lead Member: Mennonite Central Committee Canada
Country: Ethiopia
Implementing Partners: Community Based Integrated Sustainable Development Organization (CBISDO)
File Number: 1968-41
Food/Inputs: 73.5 tonnes Famix & 2.5 tonnes Oil
Budget: $72,163
Time Period: June 2010 – September 2010
Mennonite Central Committee Canada is supporting Community Based Integrated Sustainable Development Organization (CBISDO) with a four month interim project following a recent three year program. The goal of the interim project is to distribute monthly food rations (utilizing 73.5 tonnes of famix and 2.5 tonnes of oil) to 1,150 children under five and 75 pregnant and lactating women. It will train the women on health topics and track the ongoing health status of all participants. The project area of six kebeles in Addis Ababa are targeted because of the large concentration of urban poor. The planned intervention forms part of a larger CBISDO program that supports and follows up on this early childhood intervention. The logic is that better nutrition leads to better thinking, which leads to better education, which leads to better job opportunities, which leads to better/more options to purchase nutritious food. Therefore, when children currently under five years of age in the targeted area grow to be adults, they will be able to provide for themselves more nutritious food as part of an overall basket of commodities than they would have without this early intervention.
