Time Period: August 2010 – July 2011 (Year 1 of 3)
Mennonite Central Committee Canada is supporting Global Services Corps – Tanzania with the first year of a three year project to improve the long term food security in 24 communities in 4 districts of the Arusha region of Tanzania. Surveys in these communities have revealed that over the past three years, recurring drought has caused severe food insecurity particularly in drier pastoralist areas. Farmers have not harvested for three years in some areas, and cattle losses have exceeded 80% in other areas. This project will improve the long term food security in the project area by increasing the availability and consumption of locally appropriate food. Some of the activities included in the project are training farmer households to start kitchen gardens for vegetable production; equipping some households to harvest water and to solar dry garden produce;  and training families to vaccinate their poultry. The 2,000 households (85 households per community) benefiting from this project are small scale farmers, orphans and vulnerable population caregivers.
