CRWRC Kenya is following up on a previous project with pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities in the areas of Isiolo, Narok and Kajiado where as much as 99% of the livestock succumbed to the drought in 2009 and the recent harvest did not yield results. Reports from the affected areas indicate that the situation has worsened since the previous project ended in February 2010. As primary livelihood assets, livestock herds are taking longer to reacquire than expected. As a result CRWRC Kenya and local implementing partners Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Kenya and Anglican Church of Kenya will be providing a six month half ration of food to 4,000 households in eight communities in three districts of Kenya. In coordination with ongoing development work of the local implementing partners the majority of this food will be provided on a food-for-work basis in order to rehabilitate 16 water pans, complete two grain banks, and plant 70,000 trees. Approximately 20-25% of the food will be distributed freely to selected vulnerable households that are unable to participate in the food-for-work. A total of 1,200 tonnes of maize, 240 tonnes of split peas and 72 tonnes of oil will be supplied.
