United Church of Canada is supporting their partner, Ecumenical Forum of the Latin American Council of Churches in El Salvador, with a food security project in the Department of Usulután including the municipalities of Nueva Granada, Mercedes Umaňa, Berlin and Jiquilisco. These areas do not have access to formal or non-formal credit options; the families have suffered losses due to Hurricane Ida in 2009 and were affected by the period of armed conflict in the 80s and early 90s. The project aims to contribute to the food security of 210 families by providing them inputs such as seeds, seedlings, small animal species and materials to facilitate small animal production. The project will also provide training in technical areas and in strengthening community organizations.
