Thinking of Niger’s Mothers on Mother’s Day

NIAMEY, Niger – Since arriving in Niger almost two weeks ago, I have been thinking a lot about mothers.

With the highest birthrate in the world, Niger has a lot of mothers. Everywhere I look women are taking care of their children—carrying them on their backs as they work, hushing their crying, singing to them.

As it turns out, I was in Niger on Mother’s Day. I spent the day driving halfway across Niger, following visits to Canadian Foodgrains Bank-supported projects in the eastern part of the country. As we drove, my thoughts turned to the mothers in my life—my own mom, my grandmother, my mother-in-law, my sisters who have children, and a dear friend who recently became a mother.

Bishu Murmu used to leave his remote village in the arid hills of eastern India twice a year to travel 24 hours to Delhi in search of work. He would stay there up to three months at a time, eking a living from odd jobs at factories. It was the only way he could provide for his wife and two young sons.

Three New Projects Committed to Sahel Food Crisis

A total of $10.9 million committed; will help 324,000 people


Three new projects worth $5.5 million have been committed by Canadian Foodgrains Bank to help people experiencing hunger in Africa's Sahel region.

The three new projects, in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, brings the total amount of assistance being provided by the Foodgrains Bank to people in the region to 15 projects worth $10.9 million.

Quill Lake Auction Raises Over $1,000 for Foodgrains Bank

Wednesday, May 02, 2012 - Over $1,000 was raised April 25 at the annual Big Quill Community Growing Project farm auction in Quill Lake, Saskatchewan. This year the project plans to grow 145 acres of wheat or barley; last year they raised $40,000 for the Foodgrains Bank.
