CIDA Announces New Food Security Theme

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

CIDA Minister Bev Oda has announced that food security will now be a central theme of CIDA's work. In a speech May 20th, the Minister laid out three priority themes that will guide CIDA's work going forward. They are:

1) Increasing food security

2) Stimulating sustainable economic growth

3) Securing the future of children and youth

The Canadian Foodgrains Bank has been encouraging CIDA to put greater emphasis on food for the past several years. Escalating food prices and food riots around the world in 2008 made it clear that action was needed. Our constituents rallied around this theme, meeting with and writing to their Members of Parliament. Many other concerned citizens and groups voiced their support, and now our advocacy efforts have paid off. Thanks for all of your support, and congratulations on achieving food security as a CIDA focus.
