For Murray Bennett, who grew up attending South Gower Baptist Church in
Kemptville, Ontario, seeing his church close last year was extremely
difficult.
“I have been involved at the church since I was a little boy,” he says.
“I was baptized there. But it fell upon hard times and eventually
closed.”

Thursday, January 26, 2012 - One of the best parts of my job is hearing from people across the
country who want to do something about global hunger. One of the worst
parts is, well, I’ll get to that in a moment – but let’s just say it
involves a bit of ignorance about Canadian geography.
As I talk to people from my office in Winnipeg, I am connected to the
best that Canada has to offer: a 13-year-old who donates his birthday
money to help alleviate hunger; a youth group pickling and selling
cucumbers; a church planting potatoes in a cemetery; a woman knitting
socks to raise funds; school groups holding bake sales; and students
scrubbing toilets.

Yes, says a new report from two international aid agencies.
According to the report, prepared by Oxfam and Save the Children, most
rich donor nations waited until the crisis in Ethiopia, Somalia and
Kenya was in full swing last summer before donating a substantial amount
of money.

Two Canadian Foodgrains Bank supported projects that promote
conservation agriculture in Zimbabwe and Zambia have been featured in a
new book about food security in Africa.
The projects, operated together with the United Church of Canada and
Christian Reformed World Relief Committee, are included as a case
studies in The Hungry Continent: African Agriculture and Food
Insecurity, published by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation.

That’s what Alden Braul did. The Capacity Development and Food Security
Coordinator at the Canadian Foodgrains Bank works to help farmers in the
developing world grow more food using conservation agriculture—a way of
farming that requires no tilling, minimizes inputs, and preserves
moisture.
