The Canadian Coalition on Climate Change and Development (C4D)

Who Are We?

The Canadian Coalition on Climate Change and Development (C4D) is a group of development and environmental organizations that joined together in 2006 to share knowledge and take concerted action to address climate change.
Why Form a Coalition?

Climate change is a development issue. It undermines efforts to reduce poverty and vulnerability in the developing world and poses a serious threat to the attainment of the UN Millennium Development Goals. Our responsibility as global citizens includes enhancing our collective ability to mitigate this risk, and bringing a collective voice to bear on Canada’s role in addressing this challenge.

What do we Hope to Achieve as a Group?

The aim of the coalition is two-fold:
  • To build the capacity of the international development community to address the challenges climate change poses to sustainable development;
  • To bring the voice of the international development community to the debate on Canada’s response to climate change.
Increasing capacity and sharing knowledge. The coalition helps its members acquire new knowledge and understanding to mitigate the risks posed by climate change to development activities. Members share their experiences to enhance our collective knowledge of climate change as a development issue, and the coalition ‘leads by example’ through the development of appropriate tools and methodologies to address climate change mitigation and adaptation in development programming, including reducing our own carbon footprints.

Advocating for climate responsibility. Through public outreach and dialogue with elected officials and civil servants, C4D promotes government policies that assist development countries in climate change adaptation, support sustainable energy in development, integrate climate change into development programming, and achieve deep reductions in domestic greenhouse gas emissions.
